EYNULLA FATULLAYEV PROPOSES TO CREATE DEFENSE COMMITTEE FOR SPEECH FREEDOM Print E-mail
10.08.2009 16:50
On 8 August Emin Fatullayev visited his son, imprisoned Editor-in-chief of "Gundelik Azerbayjan" and "Realny Azerbayjan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev in Prison #12. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Emin Fatullayev. Eynulla does not have any complaints about prison conditions or his health, according to father Fatullayev.
Eynulla Fatullayev emphasized that the situation of freedom of speech is critical, and the creation of the Defense Committee for Freedom of Speech should be discussed publicly, said Emin Fatullayev adding that his son addressed an appeal to the Chief Editor of “Gundalik Azerbaijan” newspaper Shahvalad Chobanoglu in connection with this issue.
“Eynulla said that there is need for an organization to defend the rights of people who work in the area of freedom of speech and who have limited freedom.”
The Chief Editor of “Gundalik Azerbaijan” newspaper Shahvalad Chobanoglu told IRFS that Eynulla Fatullayev’s proposal will be seriously discussed.

Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbaijan" newspapers' editor-in-chieF Eynulla Fatullayev was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 21 April 2007 for insulting honor and dignity.  Later he was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
